CoDiet mark World Obesity Day at European Workshop for Prevention of Obesity

The European Workshop for Prevention of Obesity

The 4th of March marked World Obesity Day with this year’s theme being “Changing Systems, Healthier Lives”. This theme encouraged us to turn our attention to the systems; Health systems, government systems, food systems, the media, and the environments we work and live, and question how these systems are contributing to the increasing rates of obesity around the world.

To mark the day, CoDiet Project Coordinator, Dr Itziar Tueros, attended the European Workshop for Prevention of Obesity to present how the project is tackling obesity and diet-related diseases via innovative diet monitoring and personalised nutrition.

The workshop was organised by eprObes, a fellow member of OBEClust – a group of 9 EU-backed projects tackling obesity; Bio-Streams, OBELISK, PAS GRAS, Better4u, SHIFT2HEALTH, OBCT and HealthyW8.
The hybrid workshop, funded by the European Union, aimed to tackle the rising prevalence of obesity in Europe. The day included presentations of research findings, early intervention strategies, and policy recommendations.

How CoDiet is helping to tackle obesity

Alongside work in personalised nutrition, CoDiet researchers are analysing food-related policies that could impact our health on a population level.

A study conducted by CoDiet teams from Imperial College London and Sciensano uncovered significant gaps in implementing food-related policies across six European countries: Estonia, Finland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Slovenia might contribute to reducing NCDs, which pose one of the greatest public health challenges in the European Union.

“The most promise of impact was shown in policies targeting composition of HFSS foods, taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages, provision of meals in schools and restriction of marketing to children,” said Professor Franco Sassi, who leads CoDiet’s policy work.
